Overview

The Staff Veterinarian's duties encompass ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements set forth by both U.S. and international regulatory agencies. These responsibilities entail overseeing product licensing, animal welfare for and during clinical trials, and managing adverse events.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with other departments to plan, organize, conduct, and monitor clinical trials and testing
  • Write protocols and final reports relating to clinical trials
  • Write, review and update the regulatory departments standard operating procedures
  • Stay updated and well-informed on the 9 CFR, 21 CFR, the Animal Welfare Act, VS Memos, and any other relevant regulation
  • Communicate with government agencies (specifically USDA and FDA) and current or potential business partners concerning regulatory issues
  • Communicate with and furnish necessary documentation to distribution partners and government agencies in other countries for the purpose of registering or maintaining registration of products
  • Support the process of new product licensure
  • Apply for/renew permits to receive regulated materials into the plant as well as for export to other countries
  • Process complaints according to FDA and USDA regulations and maintain documentation regarding adverse events
  • Responsible for preparing any annual periodic Drug Experience Reports
  • Take part in the Institutional Biosafety Committee and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Conduct training for Regulatory and Animal Care staff
  • Assess health status of laboratory animals and provide medical care
  • Provide Quality Assurance support as needed

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • A Veterinary Medicine degree is necessary, along with an MS/PhD in the Biological Sciences.
  • Must possess a valid license for veterinary practice in Iowa.
  • Preferably, two years of experience in clinical practice.
  • Experience and/or a particular interest in offering regulatory support, technical writing, research and development, as well as involvement in clinical trials.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in comprehending and adhering to USDA/FDA regulations.
  • Capability to lead cross-departmental meetings for instruction or collaboration purposes.
  • Competence in comprehending, evaluating, and implementing internal processes and procedures, with a capacity for suggesting improvements.
  • Skill in delivering outstanding customer service to both internal and external clients, involving active listening, analyzing requests and customer needs, and delivering timely and positive resolutions to customer issues.
  • Effective and professional communication skills, encompassing verbal and written forms.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Software, E-mail, and electronic document control systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality rigorously, with discretion exercised when necessary to disclose information to key individuals.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Involves prolonged periods of sitting, occasional bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Demands eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient for operating various office equipment such as keyboards, photocopiers, telephones, and calculators.
  • Calls for the ability to examine and administer treatment to laboratory animals.
  • Involves working in settings involving farm animals and laboratory animals.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Typical office environment
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Housing areas for cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice and other laboratory animal species. Participation in field studies may also require working outdoors in various weather conditions. Species may include cattle, horses, and hogs
