Overview

The Senior Maintenance Mechanic position works under the general supervision of the Facilities/Maintenance Manager to diagnose, operate, repair, install and modify complex industrial Biological/Pharmaceutical equipment. This position ensures the equipment, and the facilities are in proper working order to meet production needs. This position requires the ability to multi-task and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.  This position will require the Senior Maintenance Mechanic to provide weekend (Fri-Sun) on-call service to the facility, alternating every 4-5 weeks.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Machine Maintenance/ Repair/ Troubleshooting: 

  • Diagnoses and repairs equipment; this will include fill machines, labelers, cappers, traying machines, dry heat ovens, turntables, blister machines, blenders, dust collectors, freeze dryers, walk-in coolers, low temperature freezers, sterilizers, fermenters, bio-reactors, tanks, air handler units, boilers, chillers pumps and air compressors
  • Initiate and complete preventive maintenance requests on equipment
  • Initiate and complete work orders on equipment
  • Install and repair electrical equipment, including conduit, controls and wiring
  • Maintains buildings including roofs, doors, floors, steam lines, water lines and air lines

Equipment Operation: 

  • Operates water room equipment; this may include the carbon filter, water softener, RO units, distillation unit, WFI loop, purified water loop, tanks, pumps, level and temperature controls
  • Operates central plant equipment; this may include boilers, chillers, circulation pumps, air compressors, air dyer, cooling towers, air handling units, exhaust fans, building heat system and building cooling system
  • Operates refrigeration systems; this may include walk in freezers, chest freezers, drive in coolers, air conditioning systems, humidity control systems
  • Operates building automation system
  • Conducts daily rounds of refrigeration equipment and systems
  • Operates maintenance department document management system (Mainsaver)

Maintenance Project Management: 

  • Installs and modifies equipment including:
    • installation of new equipment,
    • modifying or updating existing equipment
    • removal of obsolete equipment
    • remodeling/updating of rooms and buildings
  • Orders parts, supplies and services for projects
  • Completes machine updates, including the planning and completion of projects

Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years industrial mechanic experience.
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in one of the following; electrical, plumbing, mechanical, industrial maintenance preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain a 1st Class Stationary Engineer License within the first year of employment. EPA/Refrigeration certification preferred, but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Great communication skill both verbal and written 
  • Strong aptitude to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical issues
  • Ability to weld stainless steel and fabricate minor parts for machines
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook E-mail
  • Capacity to perform tasks individually or in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and equipment manuals
  • Consistently exhibit attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize maintenance needs and repairs as they are scheduled

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds
  • Walking, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions for extended periods of time
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as required including but not limited to hair, eye, face and foot protection and respirator
  • Ability to frequently bend at the waist and twist torso from side to side
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination and dexterity; ability to use hands to grasp or do fine manipulations
  • Must have a full range of motion in both arms
  • Must be comfortable climbing on top of and under machines and work in confined spaces

  • Typical industrial maintenance environment
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually noisy
